    • Abstract:
The infrared spectrum of $CF_{3}$ $CH_{3}$ in the region of the $CH_{3}$-rock fundamental near $970 cm^{-1}$ has been measured to better than 3 MHz resolution using a tunable microwave-sideband $CO_{2}$-laser electric-resonance optothermal spectrometer. Two perpendicular bands and a fragment of a third perpendicular band have been observed. The highest frequency band with origin at $972.7 cm^{-1}$ is the most intense and is assigned to the $CH_{3}$-rock fundamental. This band exhibits K-dependent internal rotation splittings of 4 - 12 MHz, with the pattern centers fitting a symmetric-top Hamiltonian to - 3 MHz. The contribution of the ground state splittings to these internal rotation splittings are $<$ 1 MHz. The middle frequency band, with origin near $967.2 cm^{-1}$, has internal rotation splittings of 44 - 248 MHz, with the splittings decreasing with increasing energy of the upper K state. The K subband origins have anomalous spacings which suggests that the upper state of the middle band is perturbed by a vibrational state of lower energy. A possible candidate is the upper state of the lowest frequency band observed, for which several Q branches have been identified near $965.5 cm^{-1}$. The perpendicular C-H stretching fundamental of $CF_{3}$ $CH_{3}$ at $3034 cm^{-1}$ has also been examined and an analysis of this spectrum is in progress. ; Author Institution: Molecular Physics Division, National Institute of Standards and Technology
